Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to disclose what my disability is?

Absolutely not! The requirement for this program is that you have at least one disability but we will never push you to share the nature of your disability (or disabilities).

What countries do you accept mentees and mentors from?

Currently the program is only offered to those in the United States. We hope to eventually be able to expand. If you live outside the US and have questions about starting your career, please feel free to reach out and we’ll try to put you in touch with someone that can help!

What are you looking for in your mentors?

Disable the Media is looking for mentors that have been in the fields of communications, digital strategy or journalism for at least five years.

I want to learn how to create more inclusive content and programming. Do you provide training?

Yes! Our founder has spoken at universities, corporations and industry groups about the importance of disability inclusion. We hold events throughout the year and are also available to speak at your company.

I have a disability but am established in my career. Can I still get involved?

Yes, of course! Disable the Media will be offering webinars, Twitter chats and be a source of community for disabled communications and journalism professionals. That group will launch more formally in 2021, but you can get on the mailing list from now: disablethemedia@gmail.com

Are you a 501(c)3?

Our 501(c)3 status is pending. We’re not-for-profit and Disable the Media is currently fully funded and run by its founder. We do not currently accept donations in any form and will not accept donations until further notice.

I think I want to be a mentor. How much of my time is required?

Before you first meeting with your mentor, there is a one-hour training session and overview. After that, it is up to you and your mentee to decide how frequently you will connect. We recommend committing to a few hours a month total time. Each mentorship semester is around five months. All told, we request around 15 hours of your time and are extremely appreciative for it.

If you have any other questions that we missed, please feel free to reach out to Kristen. Thank you!
